鵜飼の『鵜』は、もとは野生の海鵜で、北の千島列島で繁殖する渡り鳥です。鵜は保護鳥であるため許可を得て捕獲します。一人前の『鵜』になるため、約３年間、鵜匠の家でアユを捕る厳しい訓練を受けます。こうして、鵜匠が鵜の健康と体力づくりに心掛けて行くことで、鵜と鵜匠の信頼関係が育まれていくのです。鵜匠は鵜飼漁をするとき、古来から変わらない伝統的な衣装を身につけます。いずれも鵜飼漁をする上で欠かせない工夫をした作りになっています。

❶風折烏帽子 (かざおれえぼし)
紺色の麻布で、鵜匠が篝の火の粉から頭髪や眉毛を防ぐためのかぶりのもです。
❷漁服 (りょうふく)
綿で織られた筒袖の長着で、手首の個所が小鉤がけになっています。
❸胸当 (むねあて)
首や胸を篝の火の粉から守るためのもので、内側のポケットには手縄の修理道具等を入れます。
❹腰蓑 (こしみの)
わらで編んだもので、水が下まで浸みてこず暖かさを保ちます。
❺海鵜 (うみう)
鵜匠によって飼いならされ、水に潜ってアユを捕ります。
❻鵜篭 (うかご）
鵜飼のとき鵜を入れて船に積み込む竹製の篭で

Wild sea cormorants are migratory birds that breed in the Chishima Islands (the Kurile Islands).  The birds are protected and therefore may only be caught with a special permit.  In order to become a full-fledged fishing cormorant, the birds must go through a rigorous three year training to learn how to catch ayu (sweet fish). Throughout the training, masters pay close attention to the bird’s health and work to develop their physical strength.  Gradually, the birds learn to rely on their masters.  The masters wear traditional clothing inherited from ancient times.  These clothes are well thought out and are functional.   

❶ Kazaore-eboshi
The kazaore-eboshi (hat) is made of blue linen and protects the fisherman’s hair and eyebrows from sparks from the bonfire.    
❷ Ryofuku     
The ryofuku is a long sleeved cotton garment.  A cuff is fastened by Japanese style clasps (kohaze).
❸ Muneate     
The muneate is worn to protect the fisherman’s neck and chest from sparks.  Pockets are located inside for carrying tools used to repair the ropes.    

❹Koshimino    
The koshimino is made from straw and is worn to keep the fisherman dry and warm.

❻Ukago

Ayu (sweet fish) caught by the cormorant are put into the ukago (bamboo basket).
